Faust es una banda alemana de Krautrock compuesta originalmente por Werner "Zappi" Diermaier, Hans Joachim Irmler, Arnulf Meifert, Jean-Hervé Péron, Rudolf Sosna y Gunter Wusthoff, además del productor musical Uwe Nettelbeck y el ingeniero en sonido Kurt Graupner. El grupo se formó oficialmente en 1971 y tenía como lugar de origen Wumme. Uwe Nettelbeck, el creador y productor de Faust falleció el 17 de Enero del 2007.

Según algunos, son nada menos que “inventores de la música industrial, precursores del post-punk y padrinos del techno”. Faust empezó a crear a principios de los setenta, reunidos en una suerte de comuna, como si de una prolongación aislacionista del mayo del 68 se tratara. Revolucionarios, impredecibles y crípticos, su misión residió en dinamitar los formatos preestablecidos y vencer el encapsulamiento musical. En 1973 entregaban el seminal “The Faust Tapes”, primer disco de la historia realizado con cut’n’paste. Cada nuevo trabajo suyo hizo tabula rasa de lo anterior, nutriendo sus composisiones de improvisación, accidentes y experimentación. Abstracta e insondable, entre futurismo y primitivismo, hoy (cuando anuncian nuevo disco para el otoño) su no-música ya ha alcanzado la universalidad. Y como dice Hans Joachim Irmler: “Nada que sea ‘Faust' puede morir. Lo fáustico no muere”.
